Athletics End Losing Streak with 6-4 Win Against Yankees
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics halted their four-game losing streak with a 6-4 triumph over the New York Yankees on Saturday night, thanks in large part to two crucial two-run home runs from Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz. This victory marked the first time since May 15 that a starting pitcher, J.T. Ginn (3-3), secured a win for the A's, as he limited the Yankees to just one unearned run over six innings.
Ginn’s strong performance came against a Yankees team that had been riding high, having won five consecutive games and outscoring opponents by a significant margin of 30 runs during that stretch. Scott Barlow faced a tense situation in the ninth inning, inheriting a bases-loaded scenario but managed to retire Jazz Chisholm to seal his second save, despite walking the first three batters he encountered.
The Athletics quickly took control of the game when Langeliers launched a two-run homer off Ryan Weathers (2-3) in the first inning. Tyler Soderstrom followed with a solo shot in the sixth, and Kurtz added his tenth home run of the season in the seventh, extending the A's lead to 5-1. Despite his efforts, Weathers struggled with run support, remaining winless in his last four starts while striking out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings.
The Yankees scored their only run against Ginn in the fourth inning, when Jazz Chisholm stole second base and an error by second baseman Alika Williams allowed Cody Bellinger to cross home plate. During the fourth inning, there was a contentious moment involving the Automated Ball Strike (ABS) system when Langeliers challenged a pitch he believed to be low, but the umpire ruled it a strike despite conflicting evidence from the MLB.com replay.
Looking ahead, the Yankees will send right-hander Will Warren (6-1, 3.55 ERA) to the mound for the series finale, while the A's have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
