Auburn Claims Second NCAA Golf Championship in Three Years, Defeats UCLA 4-1

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — The Auburn Tigers, led by Jackson Koivun, secured their second NCAA golf championship in just three years, triumphing over UCLA with a 4-1 victory at the La Costa Resort on Wednesday. This win highlights Auburn's dominance in collegiate golf, echoing their previous championship in 2021.

In the match, Koivun, a freshman during Auburn's first championship run, showcased his skill by defeating Baylor Larrabee 4 and 3 in one of the pivotal clashes of the day. Shortly thereafter, Logan Reilly clinched the championship for Auburn by edging out Alex Papayoanou 1 up, finishing with a par on the challenging par-5 18th hole.

Jake Albert got the ball rolling for Auburn, securing the first point by overcoming Tyler Loree 5 and 3 in the second match. The final two pairings did not continue past the 15th hole as Reilly's victory solidified Auburn's lead. At that point, Josh Kim from UCLA was ahead 3 up against Josiah Gilbert, while Auburn's Cayden Pope held a commanding 4-up advantage over Kyle An.

Koivun, the world's top-ranked amateur, has not yet revealed his plans regarding a professional career. He has a guaranteed spot on the PGA Tour, having earned it through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program. This season, he has been outstanding, winning six out of ten tournaments and receiving his second Fred Haskins Award as the player of the year. The three-time first-team All-American has a remarkable total of 11 career victories, including three Southeastern Conference titles.

UCLA, on the other hand, was unable to secure its third championship and first in match play, having previously won titles in 1988 and 2008.
