Auburn upsets Texas A&M in SEC Tournament, keeps hot streak alive

The clock refuses to strike midnight for the Auburn Tigers, as they pulled off another upset on Wednesday to stay alive in the SEC Softball Tournament.

Auburn's Ava Ratliff stepped into the batter's box with the score tied at 8-8 and two outs in the top of the 7th inning, and battled Texas A&M pitcher Kate Munnerlyn for eight pitches. It was pitch No. 9 of the at-bat that proved to be the most costly as Ratliff crushed the pitch over the center field wall to give Auburn an 11-8 lead, needing just three outs to complete the win. The Aggies threatened Auburn with a two-out baserunner, but it was not enough to complete the comeback, and the No. 14-seeded Auburn Tigers emerged victorious, 11-8, over No. 6 seed Texas A&M in round two of the SEC Softball Tournament at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.

The game was destined to favor the offensive aspect of the game early on as Auburn took a 7-3 lead into the 4th inning. The Tigers added a run in the 5th inning on an AnnaLee Adams solo home run, which turned out to be significant as the Aggies went on to score five unanswered runs to tie Auburn, 8-8, heading to the 7th inning. Texas A&M appeared to have all of the momentum heading into Auburn's final frame before Ratliff's three-run blast with two outs after fighting off three-straight pitches.

Auburn crushed five home runs in the game, with McKaela Walker, AnnaLea Adams, Ma'Nia Womack, Haven Roebuck, and Ava Ratliff getting credit with a long ball. The Tigers recorded 10 hits in the game; Ratliff led the way with two. Charley Butler earned the win in the circle for the second straight game in relief of Ella Harrison by allowing three runs on five hits. Harrison exited her start, but re-entered in time to log the save for the Tigers. In all, Harrison allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Next up for the Tigers is a date with No. 3 seed Florida on Thursday at 10 a.m. CT in the quarterfinals of the SEC Softball Tournament.
