Austin Reaves Seeks Maximum Contract from Lakers Amid Free Agency Decisions
The Los Angeles Lakers face a pivotal moment this offseason, starting with LeBron James' choice regarding free agency. Following that, the focus will shift to rising guard Austin Reaves and his contract situation.
As it stands, Reaves is expected to opt out of his current deal and explore new opportunities this summer. While he appears inclined to remain with the Lakers, it may come at a price higher than the team is comfortable with. Reports suggest that Reaves could command around $40 million annually in free agency.
During a segment on Spectrum SportsNet, Brad Turner from the Los Angeles Times provided insight that could be troubling for Lakers supporters. "He stands to make five years, $241 million if they offer him that deal," Turner explained. "Or if he goes to a team like the Chicago Bulls, or a team like Brooklyn, he can get four years, $178 million. Those teams will kind of lurk around." He added, "Austin wants the max. Is he willing to give the Lakers a hometown deal? I'm not so sure about that."
A five-year contract worth $241 million would average out to about $48.2 million per year, a significant figure for a player who, while showcasing All-Star potential, is not yet considered a true superstar. This past season, Reaves averaged 23.3 points and 5.5 assists per game but was limited to just 51 games due to injuries, raising questions about his long-term durability.
Additionally, his performance in the playoffs has been somewhat underwhelming, and concerns about his defensive capabilities persist, stemming from his athleticism and build. If the Lakers decide to meet Reaves' max contract demands, they may find it challenging to justify that expenditure unless he can elevate his performance significantly in both regular and postseason play after James' potential departure. A sign-and-trade could be a strategic alternative, potentially bringing in versatile players who could help address the team's needs.
