Azim Dominates Claggett in Pursuit of World Title Glory
Adam Azim, the undefeated British light-welterweight, showcased his potential for a world-title challenge by securing a third-round stoppage victory over seasoned fighter Steve Claggett at the OVO Arena in Wembley, London. The 24-year-old Azim displayed his striking prowess, landing a series of punishing uppercuts and flooring Claggett just before the second round concluded.
Continuing his offensive in the third round, Azim unleashed a torrent of powerful strikes, leading the referee to halt the contest. "Thank you for everyone coming down to support me, thank you for the British and Pakistani supporting me," Azim expressed post-fight. He acknowledged the rigorous training regimen he undertook, stating, "I had to train extra hard for 12 weeks because I knew Steve was very strong." This victory marks Azim's impressive record of 15 wins in 15 bouts and bolsters his case for a shot at the IBF light-welterweight title later this year.
Claggett, a 36-year-old from Canada, suffered his ninth defeat in 51 professional fights. The event also featured British bantamweight Francesca Hennessy, who moved closer to her own title aspirations with a sixth-round stoppage of Italy’s Aurora de Persio.
Despite noticeable gaps in the arena during the undercard, the crowd grew more enthusiastic as the evening progressed, especially when Azim entered the ring to the tune of Michael Jackson’s 'Beat It'. Azim made an aggressive start, quickly causing blood to flow from Claggett's nose with a well-placed uppercut. Although Claggett had significant experience, having only been stopped once in his career, he struggled to withstand Azim's relentless assault.
As Azim seized the momentum with a stunning right hand, Claggett fell to the canvas but managed to rise before the count. However, he was unable to defend himself effectively as Azim continued to apply pressure. The referee intervened, bringing a swift end to the contest. Azim's team is strategically positioning him for a clash against the winner of the IBF title bout between Lindolfo Delgado and Arthur Biyarslanov, while a potential matchup against fellow Brit Dalton Smith looms on the horizon.
Trainer Shane McGuigan expressed confidence in Azim's future, stating, "I'd be doing something terribly wrong if he doesn't win a world title. I don't just think he is going to win a world title, I think he will be unified and a multi-weight world champion."
Earlier in the night, Hennessy delivered a strong performance, extending her record to nine wins with a decisive stoppage over De Persio. After previously facing a tough challenge in her last fight, Hennessy returned with a vengeance, demonstrating composure and skill in the ring.
