Bam Rodriguez Claims WBA Bantamweight Title, Eyes Showdown with Naoya Inoue
Bam Rodriguez has accomplished a significant milestone in his boxing career, becoming a three-division world champion after defeating Antonio Vargas in the sixth round during a match held in Glendale, Arizona. With this victory, Rodriguez secured the WBA bantamweight title, extending his undefeated record to 24 wins, 17 of which were by knockout.
Rodriguez faced a determined Vargas, who put forth a strong effort early in the fight, landing some notable punches. However, the challenges Rodriguez encountered are not uncommon for elite fighters in title bouts. By the end of the sixth round, he had managed to knock Vargas down in the fifth and ultimately finished the contest decisively with a powerful short punch.
Post-fight, Rodriguez expressed his admiration for Vargas, acknowledging his resilience. “I felt great, I felt like I did everything right,” he stated. “Antonio Vargas was a lot tougher than I expected. He had good pop in his punch, too. Thankfully I was able to get him out of there in the sixth. … A lot of respect to him.”
With his latest triumph, the question of a potential fight against super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue arises. Rodriguez remained noncommittal during a live interview, stating, “I’m ready for whoever, whenever,” and emphasized his willingness to take on any challenger his team puts in front of him.
In addition to Inoue, Rodriguez's promoter Eddie Hearn hinted at other potential matchups, including a unification bout with WBC champion Takuma Inoue, Naoya's brother, and a potential fight against WBO titleholder Christian Medina. Hearn assured fans that “the inevitable fight will get made,” and expressed confidence in Rodriguez's abilities, declaring, “There’s no one on this planet who’s beating Bam Rodriguez at 118 or 122 lbs, not even Naoya Inoue.”
