England Football Team Takes Shelter as Kansas City Faces Tornado Warning
During their first night in Kansas City, the England national football team was advised to stay indoors due to a “deadly” tornado warning. The team, managed by Thomas Tuchel, arrived in the Midwest on Saturday after a brief respite in Florida and conducted a community training session at Swope Soccer Village under clear skies.
However, a severe storm swept into the area later that evening, prompting emergency alerts to be sent to thousands, including the England squad, instructing them to seek shelter immediately. Heeding the warning, the players remained inside their accommodations at The Inn at Meadowbrook in Prairie Village.
The alerts conveyed a critical message from the National Weather Service regarding a severe thunderstorm with potential winds reaching 80 mph. Residents were urged to take cover in sturdy buildings, away from windows, due to the risk of flying debris. “For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building,” the alerts advised.
While the England camp avoided a tornado, they experienced a significant storm characterized by strong winds, thunder, and heavy rainfall. Sirens echoed through downtown Kansas City, urging the public to stay indoors for safety.
Local television stations interrupted programming, including coverage of Scotland’s World Cup match against Haiti and the NBA Finals, to provide ongoing updates about the storm. Additionally, the Kansas City fan festival was cut short, with organizers announcing its early closure due to the anticipated severe weather. They stated, “The safety of the public, staff, volunteers, and entertainers remains our top priority.”
Prior to this incident, England's training camp in Florida had already faced weather-related disruptions, including a delay of their final friendly match against Costa Rica due to thunderstorms. Fortunately, the team is now preparing for their upcoming match against Croatia, scheduled for Wednesday.
