Bengals Explore Options for Slot Cornerback Position
CINCINNATI — The Bengals are showing confidence in their slot cornerback position, much like they did with their linebackers. As the team moves forward, they have brought in some fresh talent to bolster depth, but Jalen Davis is currently positioned to retain his role as the starting nickel cornerback.
Defensive coordinator Al Golden praised Davis, stating, “He’s a great communicator... He made a big difference. He made us better.” Davis's contributions allowed for Dax Hill to shift back outside as he recovered from injury. Golden expressed his appreciation for Davis’s readiness and resilience throughout the season.
Davis, who has been with the Bengals since 2020, experienced a significant year in 2025. After spending most of his tenure on the practice squad, he stepped up when injuries struck the team. Following Cam Taylor-Britt’s season-ending injury, Davis was promoted to the active roster, where he became a key player in the slot.
During recent OTAs, Davis has continued to impress the coaching staff, reinforcing their belief in his abilities. “It shows that they have faith in me,” he remarked, emphasizing his determination to prove himself as a starter.
While Davis appears to be the top candidate for the slot cornerback role, the Bengals may also consider a committee approach. With the increasing use of multi-tight end formations across the league, versatile free agent Kyle Dugger could serve as a strategic alternative. Golden noted Dugger’s impressive physicality and ability to disrupt plays effectively.
Additionally, the Bengals have added Ja’Sir Taylor, a former sixth-round pick from the Chargers, to the mix. Taylor has more experience than Davis but struggled in his previous season. Meanwhile, Josh Newton remains in contention as he heads into training camp looking to prove his worth.
With newfound experience and a playmaking mentality, Davis is ready to make an impact. “I’m a playmaker,” he stated confidently. “I’ll go out there and make plays for us.”
