Chris Olave Remains Unavailable for Team Drills as He Recovers from Health Scare

The New Orleans Saints are looking ahead with optimism for the upcoming 2027 season, buoyed by a strong finish last year. Quarterback Tyler Shough and the offense displayed significant improvement, and wide receiver Chris Olave appeared to justify the team's first-round investment in him. However, the close of the season brought some troubling news for Olave, who was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs that sidelined him for the final game against Atlanta.

Despite the passage of five months, Olave is still not cleared to participate in team drills. While this situation raises some concerns, the Saints are wisely proceeding with caution regarding the former Ohio State standout's health. In late May, Olave shared his thoughts on dealing with the diagnosis, stating, "It was crazy. I didn't really know before when they told me, I ain't really know what a blood clot was, but once they told me, they explained the whole situation that was going on, I feel like it was tough at first. But I just put my best foot forward, (and am) just trying to do everything right so I can be healthy at the beginning of the year."

Saints coach Kellen Moore discussed Olave's situation with reporters, noting, "He hasn't been able to do the team activities obviously throughout OTAs. The blood clot was related to not participating in team and some of those things." With Olave seeking a contract extension, it’s wise for both parties to prioritize his recovery. Ensuring his long-term health is vital before the team commits significant financial resources.

Given Olave’s understanding of the offense and his existing rapport with Shough, there’s no immediate need to rush his return. A thorough medical evaluation is critical in cases of blood clots before any contact activities are resumed. As the Saints look ahead, it seems likely that both an extension and Olave's return to practice will occur before the start of training camp.
