Hurricanes Surge Ahead in Stanley Cup Final with Game 5 Triumph

June 11 (UPI) -- In a stellar performance, rookie goalie Brandon Bussi acted as a formidable barrier for the Carolina Hurricanes, guiding his team to a 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday. With Bussi stopping 23 of 25 shots, he secured his second start after Frederik Andersen was benched, helping the Hurricanes take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Andrei Svechnikov was instrumental for Carolina, netting two goals, while teammates Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho also contributed with goals of their own. “This was the biggest game of my life, personally,” Svechnikov stated after the match. “Thank God we won that game. Obviously, it's in our mind that we have one more game to do it. We are focused for the next game.”

With this victory, the Hurricanes are now just one win away from capturing their second Stanley Cup, as they prepare for Game 6 on Sunday in Las Vegas. Golden Knights head coach John Tortorella acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “We've gotta find a way.”

The game began with Pavel Dorofeyev scoring for the Golden Knights during a power play, just under seven minutes in. However, Staal quickly answered, tying the game and making history as the first player since 1956 to score in the first five games of a Stanley Cup Final. Svechnikov later gave Carolina the lead with a power play goal, followed by Aho’s successful shot before the second period concluded.

Svechnikov added another goal in the third period, widening the gap, although Dorofeyev managed to score again for Vegas shortly after. Despite the Golden Knights’ efforts, Bussi and the Hurricanes’ defense held firm, especially during a tense final stretch that included killing a late power play for Vegas.

In a concerning note for the Golden Knights, forward William Karlsson suffered a hand injury and missed significant time during the game. Tortorella indicated that Karlsson is unlikely to play in Game 6, describing him as a “winner” whose absence will be felt. Meanwhile, goalie Carter Hart stopped 20 of the 24 shots he faced, with Tortorella confirming that he did not consider switching to backup Adin Hill during the match.

Game 6 is set to take place at 8 p.m. EDT on Sunday, with a potential Game 7 scheduled for Wednesday in Raleigh. "It's huge, obviously," said Ehlers regarding the upcoming challenge. "It's going to be really hard. It's going to be a really tough game, but we are excited for it. We are ready for it. This team has been working all year for moments like these -- especially this moment."
