Slavko Vincic to Officiate Brazil vs Morocco Match Amid Past Controversy
Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic has been designated by FIFA to oversee the highly anticipated World Cup match between Brazil and Morocco this Saturday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. At 46 years old, Vincic is recognized for his extensive experience, although he carries a controversial past stemming from a police incident in 2020.
As a member of FIFA and UEFA's elite referee group, Vincic has officiated significant matches in both the Champions League and Europa League. His selection for this Group C encounter demonstrates FIFA's trust in his capabilities to manage high-stakes games involving footballing giants.
In May 2020, Vincic was part of a police operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina that led to his detention during a raid at a rural property. Authorities were investigating allegations of prostitution, drug trafficking, and illegal weapons possession at the site, where 35 individuals were present. The police seized a number of firearms, cash, medications, cocaine, and around €10,000 during the operation, which quickly captured the attention of European media due to Vincic's status in the sport.
Vincic has maintained his innocence, stating that he unknowingly attended a business lunch that turned out to be a significant error. "I ended up at this ranch by chance. I have my own company, and I was in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a business meeting. I accepted a lunch invitation, which turned out to be my biggest mistake," he explained in an interview with Slovenian media. Following an investigation, authorities found no evidence against him, leading to the closure of the case without any charges, allowing Vincic to resume his officiating duties.
FIFA has also confirmed the full officiating team for the Brazil vs Morocco match. Slovenian assistant referees Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic will join Vincic, with Swiss officials Sandro Schaerer serving as the fourth referee and Stephane de Almeida as the reserve referee. This match is one of the standout fixtures in the opening round, as Brazil aims for another World Cup title while Morocco looks to build on its recent successes. Group C additionally includes teams from Haiti and Scotland.
