Local Team Eyes Historic Victory at 24 Hours of Le Mans

A motorsport team from Kent is gearing up for a thrilling challenge as it competes in one of the most demanding endurance races in the world. Cadillac Hertz Team Jota, based in Tunbridge Wells, is set to participate in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend, aiming for its inaugural overall victory in the iconic French race since its establishment in 2000.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is renowned for its difficulty, with drivers racing non-stop for a full day around the 8.5-mile (7.8 km) Circuit de la Sarthe. Jack Aitken, one of the drivers on the team, shared his insights with BBC South East, stating, "Le Mans is the Everest of motor racing, and because it's such a prestigious race, you have to take on the great and the good if you want to win it."

This event marks a significant milestone for Team Jota, which has evolved from a modest British racing outfit into a prominent player in the world of endurance racing over the past 23 years. Sam Hignett, the founder of Team Jota, reflected on the team's journey, saying, "It all started with myself as a not very good racing driver. I took a back seat and managed the team, and we've grown from me and a mechanic to about 75 staff members for the Silverstone testing."

With the collaboration with Cadillac, the team has the opportunity to face off against some of the top competitors in the industry, including giants like Ferrari, Porsche, and Alpine. Keely Bosn, programme manager for Cadillac Racing, expressed optimism about the team's chances this year, noting, "Le Mans is gruelling. It's the pinnacle of racing and it all comes together for one long 24-hour race, and we're there to win it."

Winning at Le Mans remains the ultimate objective for Team Jota, especially after gaining international attention last year when former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button joined their roster. The 93rd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will commence on Saturday, culminating with the chequered flag 24 hours later.
