Satou Sabally's Stellar Performance Propels New York Liberty Past Atlanta Dream
The New York Liberty's recent 104-90 triumph over the Atlanta Dream may serve as a promising sign for the team's prospects this season. Historically, the Commissioner’s Cup has foreshadowed the Liberty's performance, with their recent successes indicating a strong trajectory. Currently, they lead the Eastern Conference standings in the Commissioner’s Cup and have two more games to secure their spot in the finals.
Liberty forward Breanna Stewart emphasized the importance of consistency as the team approaches the final stretch of the Cup, stating, “We want to make sure that, over the next (two games), we try to win them all, just so … our growth as a team is continuing to be upward.” The Liberty, under first-year coach Chris DeMarco, have shown remarkable improvement, boasting a 9-4 record and riding a six-game winning streak.
In Thursday's match, the Liberty delivered one of their strongest performances of the season against a tough Dream squad. Five players reached double digits in scoring, led by Satou Sabally, who contributed 19 points off the bench. Stewart matched Sabally's output and added a solid 11 rebounds along with five assists. Marine Johannes chipped in 17 points, while Jonquel Jones and Pauline Astier each scored 16 points, with Astier also tallying eight rebounds and five assists.
DeMarco praised his team's execution, noting, “The ball was moving… We were getting stops when we needed to.” The Liberty's defense was particularly effective, limiting Atlanta's three-point shooting while dominating the boards 40-24. The Dream faced challenges at the free-throw line as well, missing 12 attempts.
Sabally's performance exemplified the depth of the Liberty roster, as she embraced her new role after previously starting every game in her last three seasons. Averaging 11.4 points in a reserve position, Sabally’s contributions have been vital. She shared a lighthearted moment with fans after sinking a three-pointer, saying, “I’ll hit three more,” which brought smiles all around. Stewart added, “Nobody’s surprised that Satou had a night like tonight.”
