Jonathon Cooper of the Broncos Faces New Assault Charges Following Arrest
DENVER, CO - Jonathon Cooper, the linebacker for the Denver Broncos, is contending with new legal challenges as he faces charges of felony second-degree assault by strangulation and misdemeanor third-degree assault. This development follows his arrest last week due to a domestic incident involving his girlfriend, for which he initially faced a charge of misdemeanor criminal mischief, as reported by The Denver Post's Luca Evans.
Cooper entered a not guilty plea during a court appearance on Monday, and a trial date has been set for late July. The situation has garnered attention, especially regarding how it may affect his standing with the team and in the league.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton addressed the media about the issue, emphasizing that he had a thorough discussion with Cooper and is currently monitoring the situation closely. “I think the league has done a good job of kind of coming in and really taking over that responsibility. We had a long visit with ‘Coop’, and now the process plays out,” Payton stated, indicating that the league's involvement is expected as events unfold.
When questioned about whether he had discussed Cooper's situation with the team, Payton mentioned that he had not yet done so but plans to address it during next week's minicamp meetings. “I haven’t. My instincts told me not to right away. This time next week, we have three days of mini camp. There will be a time to talk about it,” he added.
As Cooper continues to navigate these serious allegations, the Broncos are well-prepared at the edge rusher position, with players like Jonah Elliss and Dondrea Tillman stepping up in a reserve capacity. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph noted the promising development of rookie Que Robinson, who has shown potential as a future starter. For now, the focus remains on the upcoming legal proceedings and the team's strategy moving forward.
