Berlin Brothersvalley Triumphs Over Carmichaels in PIAA 1A Softball Playoff Opener

BERLIN — In an exhilarating showdown, junior pitcher Elena Ritchey from Berlin Brothersvalley outperformed her counterpart, senior Bailey Barnyak of Carmichaels, leading the Mountaineers to a 2-0 victory in the opening round of the PIAA 1A softball playoffs held on June 1. "That was an old-fashioned pitchers' duel," remarked Berlin coach Brian Slope. "Elena was fantastic in the circle. We played great defense behind her. (Carmichaels) is a very good team. (Barnyak) is first class."

Ritchey dominated the mound, allowing only two hits, hitting one batter, and striking out an impressive 12 opponents. "This feels great," said Ritchey. "Things don't always go as planned. We struggled a bit in the box, but it was a great team effort and got the win in the end. That's all that matters."

The Mountaineers initiated the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Elsie Barna led off with a single, stole second base, and moved to third after a single by freshman Callie Ritchey. Bena Barna, a sophomore, executed a perfectly placed bunt that resulted in an error, allowing Elsie to score. "I thought about bunting before the at-bat," Bena shared. "(Barnyak) is a good pitcher. I felt like we were in the perfect situation for it. We practice it a lot. I just wanted to get something going. It's so much fun playing with these girls."

Ritchey faced her only real challenge in the fourth inning when Ke'Lani Chun hit a single. After Chun advanced to third base, Ritchey struck out the next two batters, escaping the threat. The Mountaineers secured an additional run in the sixth inning when Elena Ritchey hit a single, followed by Elsie Barna's sacrifice bunt, which put her in scoring position. Callie Ritchey then came through with a clutch RBI single. "That's senior leadership," said Slope. "Our senior cleanup hitter lays down a perfect sacrifice bunt and then Callie came through with a big 2-out hit. We've been doing that all year. Someone different has stepped up and taken on that role of making the difference in a game."

With this victory, Berlin celebrated only its second PIAA playoff win in the history of its softball program. They will face District 10 champion Cambridge Springs next, marking a rematch from last year's quarterfinals, where the Devils prevailed 4-2. "Our plan stays the same. We want to get off to a good start and play good defense," Slope stated. "This team decided early in the year that we were going to focus on one pitch, one at-bat, one inning at a time. That's what we've done all year. We want to win the inning and carry that on to the next one."
