Blue Jays Triumph Over Yankees 8-5 with Strong Contributions from Okamoto and Springer
TORONTO (AP) — In a thrilling matchup on Friday night, the Toronto Blue Jays clinched an 8-5 victory against the New York Yankees, bolstered by home runs from Kazuma Okamoto and George Springer. Alejandro Kirk made a significant impact in his return from injury, recording three hits and driving in two runs after missing 62 games due to a fractured left thumb.
Kirk's performance was exceptional, going 3 for 3 at the plate with an additional walk. His efforts not only contributed to the win but also saw him score during the game. Meanwhile, the Yankees’ Cody Bellinger hit his 10th home run of the season, but the loss ended New York's four-game winning streak.
The game took a turn for the Yankees when outfielder Trent Grisham exited in the sixth inning due to tightness in his right hamstring after sliding into second base on a hit that brought in two runs. Max Schuemann took over for Grisham on the bases.
Trey Yesavage (3-3) secured his first win in four starts, allowing five runs on four hits over five-plus innings while walking six batters and striking out three. In the ninth inning, Louis Varland delivered a clean performance to earn his 12th save without a miss this season.
Okamoto's impressive 423-foot home run into the upper deck marked his 14th of the season, making him the tenth player in Blue Jays history to achieve this feat at Rogers Centre, with the last occurrence dating back to May 2017. Springer matched this energy with his first home run since May 23, bringing his season total to six.
With this victory, the Blue Jays improved their record to 12-6 when hitting multiple home runs in a game. The Yankees had a chance to rally in the eighth inning, loading the bases, but Braydon Fisher managed to escape the jam by inducing a flyout from Ryan McMahon.
Looking ahead, the Yankees are set to start right-hander Cam Schlittler (7-3, 1.87 ERA) in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman (4-4, 3.60).
