Brad Gilbert Identifies Key Areas for Ben Shelton to Enhance His Wimbledon Prospects

Ben Shelton, a promising talent in American tennis, has been advised to refine specific aspects of his game ahead of Wimbledon. With the U.S. men's last Grand Slam victory dating back to Andy Roddick's 2003 US Open win, Shelton’s performance has attracted much attention, particularly following his second-round exit at the recent French Open, marking his earliest Grand Slam departure in three years.

Currently seeded 14th at Wimbledon, Shelton faces the challenge of surpassing his previous best performance at the tournament, where he reached the second round last year before losing in straight sets to Laslo Djere. This year, however, anticipation is building as fans hope for a more significant impact from the young player.

On The Big T Podcast, esteemed coach Brad Gilbert discussed Shelton's potential and highlighted two crucial areas for improvement: his serve and return game. Despite being recognized for one of the more formidable serves on the ATP Tour, Gilbert believes Shelton can enhance his performance further. “With Ben, so goes the return, so goes his game,” Gilbert remarked, emphasizing the need for Shelton to be more consistent. He suggested that Shelton should aim for more aces, indicating he leans too heavily on kick serves and slices.

Gilbert noted that if Shelton can make even slight improvements to his return game, he could be positioned for a deeper run in the tournament. While Gilbert has confidence in other top players like Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic as frontrunners, he still sees potential in Shelton, provided he can address these key weaknesses.

With experience from three prior Wimbledon appearances, Shelton has shown promise, especially as he achieved a quarter-final finish last year. As he prepares for this year's championship, the focus will be on whether he can elevate his game and meet the growing expectations.
