Braden Montgomery's Dramatic Homer in 10th Inning Propels White Sox Past Braves, 6-5
CHICAGO (AP) — In an electrifying major league debut, Braden Montgomery delivered a two-run homer in the 10th inning, leading the Chicago White Sox to a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. This win marked a significant comeback for the White Sox, who faced an early 4-0 deficit against the league-leading Braves, currently boasting a record of 45-22.
The White Sox began their resurgence in the third inning when Miguel Vargas smashed a two-run homer, igniting the team’s hopes. Montgomery contributed to the rally with an RBI single in the fourth, narrowing the gap to 4-3. Jacob Gonzalez then leveled the score with a run-scoring single in the seventh inning.
Atlanta's Matt Olson was a standout performer early in the game, hitting two home runs in the first three innings and driving in three runs. In the 10th, Mauricio Dubón put the Braves ahead 5-4 with an RBI single, seemingly shifting momentum back to Atlanta.
However, the excitement peaked in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs and automatic runner Andrew Benintendi on third base, Montgomery faced closer Raisel Iglesias. He connected on an 0-1 changeup, launching the ball 343 feet over the left-field fence, much to the delight of the fans at Rate Field.
This victory allowed the second-place White Sox (35-31) to inch closer to Cleveland, who leads the AL Central by just half a game.
