Burton's Stellar Performance Leads Valkyries to Narrow 87-81 Victory Over Mercury
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In an impressive display, Veronica Burton scored 25 points, with 19 of those coming in the first half, helping the Golden State Valkyries secure an 87-81 win against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night. Burton also contributed eight assists, showcasing her all-around game as the Valkyries built an early lead. Gabby Williams matched Burton’s scoring output with 25 points of her own, while Janelle Salaun added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Valkyries shot an efficient 57.1% in the first half, racing to a 49-32 advantage by halftime. Burton was particularly effective, hitting five of her seven shots in the initial quarters and finishing the game with a shooting percentage of 46.7% (7 for 15). Williams' three-pointer with just under six minutes left increased the lead to 74-67, and a timely layup from Kaila Charles further solidified their position.
Despite their dominance, the Valkyries faced a scare when the Mercury rallied, cutting the deficit to just five points by the end of the third quarter. They had previously led by as many as 18 points. Golden State guard Tiffany Hayes briefly left the game after a collision but returned to play.
Alyssa Thomas, who had missed a previous game due to a calf injury, led Phoenix with 22 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. The Mercury's struggles were compounded by 16 turnovers that allowed the Valkyries to capitalize with 17 points off those mistakes. Monique Akoa Makani added 19 points, and Natasha Mack recorded 10 rebounds for Phoenix, which has been inconsistent, winning two games after a six-game losing streak.
The two teams are set to compete again on July 29 in Phoenix, while the Mercury will head to Dallas for their next matchup on Thursday night. The Valkyries are scheduled to visit Seattle on Friday.
