Brandon Bussi's Stellar Play Leads Carolina Hurricanes to Stanley Cup Victory

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Just hours prior to the opening game of the Stanley Cup Final, Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour expressed gratitude for the fact that the team had not needed to rely on backup goaltender Brandon Bussi during their playoff run. “Haven’t had to use him, (and) to be honest, I hope we don’t because something’s gone wrong,” Brind'Amour remarked. However, Bussi ultimately stepped in and played a crucial role in securing the championship for the Hurricanes.

After Frederik Andersen had manned the net throughout the earlier playoff rounds and the beginning of the final series, Bussi took over during Game 3 and proved to be a game-changer. He faced 87 shots throughout the series against the Vegas Golden Knights, successfully stopping 81 of them, while Andersen’s availability remained uncertain after he did not dress for Game 4.

The 27-year-old goaltender from Long Island was not entirely unfamiliar to Hurricanes fans, having played in nearly half of the team's games during the regular season, where he notched 31 wins in 39 starts, helping Carolina secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference. In February, he signed a three-year contract extension for a reasonable $5.7 million.

Bussi's journey to this moment has been unconventional. He went undrafted and spent several years in the Boston Bruins' minor league system with the Maine Mariners and Providence Bruins. Last summer, he was signed by the Florida Panthers as their third-string goalie. However, after the Hurricanes claimed him off waivers, he found himself thrust into a key role due to injuries to both Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov.

His importance was especially evident during the finals. Bussi entered Game 3 when the Hurricanes were down 4-0, stopping all 18 shots he faced and igniting a comeback. The only goal he allowed was a tough double-overtime winner following an unfortunate bounce off the boards. In the decisive Game 6, he made critical saves, denying top scorers like Brett Howden and Tomas Hertl, much to the delight of his family in the stands. As Hurricanes fans in Las Vegas chanted “Buss-i! Buss-i!” he celebrated his third career shutout, cementing his status as a Stanley Cup champion.
