Braves Power Past Reds with Solo Homers to Claim Series
The Atlanta Braves showcased their power at the plate, relying on solo home runs to secure a 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, May 30, at Great American Ball Park. Despite missing out on multiple opportunities to drive in runs with runners on base, the Braves' long balls proved decisive in their series win, with hopes of a sweep on the final day of May.
Leading the charge was Ronald Acuña Jr., who hit two solo homers, complemented by contributions from Jorge Mateo and Matt Olson. With this win, the Braves improved their record against the Reds, while Cincinnati's struggles continued, dropping to 29-28 overall and 9-17 for the month.
Cincinnati faced a tough blow before the game began, as relief pitcher Pierce Johnson was placed on the 15-day injured list, joining Graham Ashcraft, who was placed on the 60-day IL the previous day. This put additional pressure on starter Brady Singer, who managed to pitch five innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and issuing four walks.
JJ Bleday's two-run homer in the second inning initially gave the Reds a 2-1 advantage. However, Acuña's timely equalizer in the third and Mateo's fifth-inning shot shifted the momentum to Atlanta. Olson later added to the Braves' lead in the seventh inning, while Cincinnati's bullpen managed to limit further damage after a rocky start.
The Reds managed only five hits during the game, with Elly De La Cruz and Blake Dunn reaching base but unable to capitalize. With an illness sidelining Dane Myers, Dunn stepped up to the leadoff role but struggled to make an impact. As the Reds look to avoid a series sweep, they will send Nick Lodolo to the mound against Atlanta's Spencer Strider on Sunday, May 30, with the first pitch set for 1:40 p.m.
