Brittney Griner Joins Elite Club with 6,000th Career Point in WNBA
HARTFORD, CT — Brittney Griner etched her name into WNBA history, becoming the 18th player to reach the milestone of 6,000 career points. She accomplished this feat with a four-foot turnaround jumper while playing for the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, May 30, at PeoplesBank Arena.
Griner, who inked a one-year contract worth $1.19 million with the Sun for this season, previously spent 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury before a brief stint with the Atlanta Dream last year. She was the top pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, selected by the Mercury.
Making her return to the court, Griner entered the game with 5,999 points after recovering from a rib injury. During the match, she took a hit to her left eye from Erica Wheeler late in the first half and had to leave the game momentarily. After the foul was classified as a Flagrant 1, Griner returned to successfully convert both free throw attempts.
The 35-year-old center, who has a remarkable career record, is set to play in Connecticut before the franchise relocates to her hometown of Houston next season. A 10-time All-Star, Griner has also secured a championship with the Mercury and has been named Defensive Player of the Year twice. Throughout her illustrious career, she has maintained averages of 16.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game.
As Griner continues to demonstrate her scoring prowess, she adds to an already impressive legacy in women’s basketball.
