Brock Purdy Inspires New Wave of Late-Round Quarterback Prospects

Brock Purdy's incredible journey from being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to becoming a key player for the San Francisco 49ers highlights one of the most compelling narratives in recent football history. Known as "Mr. Irrelevant," Purdy defied expectations by climbing the 49ers' depth chart and seizing his chance midway through his rookie campaign. Over nine games, he amassed 1,374 passing yards, tossed 13 touchdowns, and threw just four interceptions. Fast forward three years, and he has secured a remarkable $265 million contract.

While replicating Purdy's success is no easy feat, his story serves as a model for NFL scouts evaluating the quarterbacks from the upcoming 2026 draft class. FOX Sports sought insight from scouts on these Day 3 prospects, and their evaluations revealed some intriguing talents.

Leading the pack is Cade Klubnik, a fourth-round selection by the New York Jets out of Clemson. At 22, he has a promising opportunity to earn playing time, competing against veteran Geno Smith and backup Bailey Zappe. Scouts commend Klubnik for his strong arm and understanding of the game, although some caution about his decision-making under pressure. An injury-riddled senior year at Clemson likely affected his draft stock, which had initially placed him as a potential late first-rounder.

Coming in second is Garrett Nussmeier, picked in the seventh round by the Kansas City Chiefs. The LSU standout was regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation during his junior season until an abdominal injury, later linked to a spinal cyst, hampered his senior campaign. With a chance to learn under Andy Reid and alongside Patrick Mahomes, scouts believe he has significant growth potential for future opportunities.

In third place is Taylen Green, a sixth-round pick from Arkansas selected by the Cleveland Browns. Known for his athleticism, highlighted by a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the combine, Green is seen as a raw talent who needs polish in his passing mechanics. However, the Browns' coaching staff may help him develop, especially given the uncertain quarterback situation with Deshaun Watson and others.

Philadelphia's Cole Payton (fifth round), New England's Behren Morton (seventh round), and Washington's Athan Kaliakmanis (seventh round) round out the rankings, each facing tough challenges to secure a spot on their respective rosters. While it remains uncertain if any of these quarterbacks will reach Purdy's heights, his journey serves as a reminder that anything is possible.
