Broncos Coach Sean Payton Addresses Jonathon Cooper's Arrest

The Denver Broncos concluded their second week of organized team activities (OTAs) on Thursday, marking a significant moment for the team as coach Sean Payton addressed the media regarding outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper's recent legal troubles.

During the press conference following Thursday's practice, Payton was questioned about the arrest of Cooper, which took place last week. He remarked, “I think this: I think the league has done a good job of kind of coming in and really taking over that responsibility." He noted that the team had a lengthy discussion with Cooper and emphasized that the matter will now unfold through the legal process. “The league obviously will be very much involved in that. We’ll stay abreast, but much like you all. I think that’s where it’s at. We just go from there,” he added.

Payton assured reporters that the organization would remain updated on the situation. He stated, "When it’s the offseason or it’s the weekend, no news is always good news. Knock on wood, we’ve had a long stretch where that’s been the case." He expressed the team's intent to adhere to the league's protocols and the guidance of local authorities as the case progresses.

Cooper, who is 28 years old, was arrested alongside his girlfriend last week following allegations of domestic violence. The accusations include claims that he assaulted her by grabbing her neck and throwing her multiple times. After posting an apology on social media, Cooper entered a not guilty plea to all charges on Monday, with a motion hearing scheduled for July 6 and a jury trial set for July 22. In his Instagram story, he expressed remorse, stating, "I apologize to my family and my friends and my community … . And so many others. Sincerely. I apologize. This situation is not who I am."

It is expected that the Broncos and the NFL will refrain from making any decisions regarding Cooper's status until the trial concludes.
