Brooklyn Nets Expected to Pass on Josh Minott's $2.6 Million Option

The Brooklyn Nets face a crucial offseason as they look to rebound from a disappointing 2025-26 NBA season that concluded with a 20-62 record. Key decisions loom, particularly regarding their No. 6 overall pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft and potential free agents like forward Josh Minott.

Keith Smith of Spotrac provided insights into the Nets' strategy, stating, "Minott still has rotation potential. For the Nets, who are likely to have a lot of cap space, it doesn’t make sense to keep Minott on this deal. This option will be declined, but Brooklyn could re-sign Minott later." This assessment highlights Minott's uncertain future with the team amidst discussions about four players with team options, including Day'Ron Sharpe, Malachi Smith, and Ziaire Williams.

At just 23 years old, Minott has recently showcased his talent, emerging as a significant contributor after being selected 45th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft from Memphis. In the 16 games he played for the Nets after the trade deadline, he averaged 10.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 steals, boasting impressive shooting percentages of 49.1% from the field and 39.5% from three-point range.

General manager Sean Marks and head coach Jordi Fernandez took a calculated risk by acquiring Minott to assess his potential in an increased role compared to his time with the Boston Celtics. He demonstrated not only scoring and defensive capabilities but also added valuable athleticism to the team.

As the Nets aim to maximize their cap space this offseason, they may prioritize signing key players or executing trades. Despite the expected decline of Minott's team option, there remains a possibility he could return to Brooklyn, although it may take some time with him entering free agency.
