Bulldogs Face Elimination After Narrow Defeat to Sooners

June 14, 2026; Omaha, NE, USA – The Georgia Bulldogs find themselves on the brink of elimination after suffering a 4-3 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in the College World Series. The game took place at Charles Schwab Field, where the Bulldogs will need to fight for survival against Texas on Tuesday night.

Despite a strong performance from pitcher Caden Aoki, who held his ground after a shaky start, Oklahoma’s Xander Mercurius outshined him, leading the Sooners to victory. Oklahoma capitalized early, scoring three runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run. Georgia struggled to recover and could not capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Georgia head coach Wes Johnson reflected on the game, stating, “I thought it was a really good ball game tonight. We had some opportunities to get back into the game, and we didn’t cash in on those.” He praised Aoki’s resilience, especially in light of the need to conserve the bullpen for future games.

The Bulldogs did find some offensive success, hitting three home runs, including a two-run shot by Kenny Ishikawa in the fourth inning. However, all three homers came with no runners on base, and Georgia struggled significantly with runners in scoring position, finishing 0-for-3 in those situations.

As they prepare for the crucial matchup against Texas, Georgia will have to tap into their recent experience of overcoming challenges to keep their championship hopes alive. “It’s when guys start to press, that things go bad,” Johnson noted, emphasizing the importance of staying composed in high-pressure moments. The Bulldogs will look to bounce back and extend their season in Omaha.
