Burleson Shines with Three RBIs as Cardinals Overpower Mets 7-0 for Fifth Consecutive Win
NEW YORK (AP) — Alec Burleson showcased his talent on Tuesday night, hitting a home run and driving in three runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a commanding 7-0 win over the New York Mets. This victory marks the Cardinals' fifth consecutive win, inching them closer to their season record.
Dustin May delivered a strong performance on the mound, pitching six innings and helping to end his team’s seven-start winless run. The right-hander allowed just four hits while striking out six batters and walking one. Prior to this game, May had not secured a victory since April 21.
The Cardinals ignited their offense in the third inning, thanks to a two-run double from JJ Westerholt off Freddy Peralta (4-5), which set the stage for a four-run rally. Jordan Walker contributed with an RBI double, and Lars Nootbaar capped off the inning with a run-scoring groundout.
Burleson then added to the Cardinals' lead with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, followed by an RBI double off Joey Gerber in the seventh. This marked Burleson's fifth game of the season with three RBIs, putting him tied for seventh place in the National League for RBIs.
Ivan Herrera had a noteworthy night as well, getting hit by pitches twice and registering three hits in five at-bats. Nathan Church, who returned from the injured list earlier that day, also achieved three hits and made a remarkable catch to deny Marcus Semien a two-run double.
The Mets, who have been shut out seven times this season, saw A.J. Ewing collect two hits while Francisco Alvarez returned from a right knee injury, finishing 1 for 3. Peralta struggled, giving up six runs and striking out five over six innings of work.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals will have right-handed pitcher Andre Pallante (6-4, 3.96 ERA) on the mound for the next game against RHP Christian Scott (2-0, 2.50) as the series continues on Wednesday night.
