Byron Athletes Shine at State Track and Field Championships

ST. MICHAEL — On Saturday, Byron track and field athletes Carson Heimer and Beau Nicklay showcased their talents at the Class 2A boys state meet held at St. Michael-Albertville High School. Under the guidance of coach Dan Storlie, the duo displayed a fierce competitive spirit, making them standout performers in the competition.

Both athletes excelled particularly in the 100-meter dash, with Heimer earning a commendable second place with a time of 10.74 seconds. Nicklay closely followed, finishing fifth at 10.80 seconds. Heimer's journey back to form has been remarkable, especially after recovering from a foot injury sustained during football season, which required surgery. "I got a lot of help from my sprint coach, Ben Halder," Heimer stated, expressing satisfaction with his progress as he also participated in the high jump event, clearing 6-foot-4.

Nicklay made his mark in the long jump, securing a second-place finish with a jump of 22 feet, 7 ½ inches. The two also contributed to the Byron 4x200 relay team, which placed fourth overall with a time of 42.57 seconds.

Pine Island's 4x200 relay team, comprised of Cooper Rutten, Owen Harstad, Aspen Gorman, and Peyton Loftus, entered the meet as the seventh seed but defied expectations. They not only topped their heat in the preliminaries but also clinched first place in the finals with a time of 1:27.55. "It's our first time competing in Class 2A, and I just thought we represented our school and our section really well," said coach Matt Northrop.

In individual events, Kasson-Mantorville senior David Obst achieved a personal best in the 1,600, finishing third with a time of 4:18.02. Austin's Triumph Ogbeide excelled as well, placing third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.64 seconds. Stewartville's Thomas Lofgren finished fifth in the discus, launching it 160 feet, 8 inches. This state meet exemplified the hard work and dedication of the athletes involved.
