Caitlin Clark's Last-Second Three-Pointer Propels Fever to Victory Over Mystics

The Indiana Fever sought to bounce back after a frustrating loss to the New York Liberty just three days prior. In a highly anticipated matchup against the Washington Mystics, who had previously edged the Fever in a thrilling overtime game, the stakes were high at CareFirst Arena on Monday night. Caitlin Clark, determined to turn the tide for her team, delivered a performance that would be remembered.

Amid criticism regarding her recent play and interactions with referees and teammates, Clark faced the pressure head-on. After a promising start to the season, the Fever had stumbled, recording only one win in their last four games. However, as the final moments of the game approached, the Fever found themselves in a tight spot after relinquishing a significant lead.

With just over 40 seconds remaining, the Mystics took a 74-73 advantage following a layup by Shakira Austin. Clark drew a foul shortly after but missed both of her free throws, giving Washington a chance to capitalize. Yet, Clark was not done. After executing a perfect decoy screen, she found herself in an open position beyond the arc. Launching a shot from an impressive 31 feet, she secured the win for Indiana with a beautiful three-pointer that swished through the net.

Reflecting on her game-winner, Clark remarked, “Cotie almost got a fingertip on it. It kind of worked out perfectly that she went for the steal, and honestly, probably the most wide open shot I had all night, so my hands got a little clammy, but still went in, I guess.” She concluded the game with 19 points, three rebounds, and five assists, marking her first career game-winning shot in the WNBA.

The Mystics, still reeling from a public incident involving their coach Sydney Johnson, were unable to recover after a tumultuous weekend. Johnson had been ejected from a previous game following a heated exchange with officials, a situation that contributed to the team’s struggle. Following the Fever's victory, Indiana improved to a 6-5 record, while Washington fell to 4-6. As Indiana heads home, they look to build on the momentum generated by Clark's dramatic finish, while the Mystics must quickly regroup for their upcoming games.
