Calallen Baseball Triumphs Over Bullard to Secure State Championship Berth

BUDA — The Calallen Wildcats baseball team, known for its extensive playoff experience and a roster filled with seasoned players, is set to defend its state title next week at Dell Diamond. Key contributions came from two freshmen, who played pivotal roles in their team's success against Bullard.

In Game 1, freshman Jimmy Tipton stepped up in relief, leading Calallen to an extra-inning victory. Following that, freshman Aiden Gonzalez took over for Drayton Mitchell and closed out Game 2, allowing just one hit in the final two innings and helping secure a decisive 14-4 win to complete the series sweep.

“We know that he has that type of ability and he doesn't get rattled or anything,” said Calallen coach Steve Chapman, praising Gonzalez's performance. The solid pitching allowed the Wildcats’ powerful offense to dominate, culminating in Blake Quinn’s impressive two-run homer in the fifth inning, which triggered the run rule and sealed Calallen's place in the championship.

The Wildcats showcased their offensive prowess with three home runs and eight extra-base hits, scoring four runs in three separate innings. After briefly falling behind 4-4 in the third, Wyatt Duke's solo homer ignited a four-run rally, ensuring Calallen maintained control for the remainder of the game.

Dallin DeBellas led the charge with a stellar performance, going 3 for 3 with a triple, two doubles, and four RBIs. “We were looking to get after them early and just keep on them so we could take this one home,” DeBellas stated, reflecting on the team’s strategy. The Wildcats’ lower-order hitters also shone, combining for an impressive 7 for 8 at the plate with nine RBIs.

Calallen, alongside London, which also advanced to the Class 3A Division I title game, aims to make history by becoming the first Coastal Bend team to win back-to-back state championships since Robstown did so in 1991 and 1992. The Wildcats will face Pleasant Grove at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 5, at Dell Diamond.
