Cameron Ruge Dominates Final Round to Claim Michigan Open Title

The Michigan Open saw an unexpected shift in momentum as Cameron Ruge surged ahead in the final round of the prestigious tournament. Starting the day tied for the lead, Ruge showcased an impressive performance, ultimately finishing with a remarkable seven-stroke victory.

Ruge, a 27-year-old teaching professional from Traverse City, delivered a stunning final round of 7-under 64 at the 109th Michigan Open held at the Cedar River Course in Shanty Creek Resort, Bellaire. His flawless game allowed him to capture the James D. Standish Trophy and a $15,000 prize. "When the last putt went in, it was just a mix of emotions coming over me," Ruge reflected. "I was so locked in all day. I didn't check the leaderboard at all." It was a moment of joy as he was embraced by his mother and girlfriend after his win.

As an assistant pro at Bay Meadows Family Golf Center, Ruge demonstrated precision by hitting all 18 greens in regulation during the final round, carding seven birdies without a single bogey. He sealed his victory with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, celebrated by a captivated audience.

Finishing the tournament at 16 under, Ruge attributed part of his success to a recent switch from a blade putter to a mallet. Initially tied for the lead with two others, Ruge quickly took control with three birdies on the front nine, including a remarkable approach shot on the fifth hole that landed just two feet from the pin.

A tie for second place at 9 under included notable competitors such as 2017 Michigan Open champion Matt Thompson, who shot a 64 with three eagles, and defending champion Otto Black. Other runners-up were Joe Juszczyk and Will Preston. Meanwhile, four additional golfers tied at 8 under, including Tim Pearce and 16-year-old Bentley Coon, who was aiming to become the youngest champion in tournament history. Former Michigan golfer Will Anderson set a course record with a stunning 63, finishing in a tie for 11th.
