Canada's Koné Set for Surgery Following Serious Injury in World Cup Match

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canada's landmark victory in their first World Cup match was marred by a severe injury sustained by midfielder Ismaël Koné. The 24-year-old player suffered damage to his left leg during the second half when Qatar's Assim Madibo tackled him from behind, resulting in Koné collapsing to the pitch. His distress was evident, prompting nearby players to call for immediate medical assistance.

Madibo received a red card for the foul, which left Qatar down to nine players after another teammate, Homam Ahmed, was dismissed earlier in the game. As Koné received on-field treatment, his teammates formed a protective circle around him until he was taken away on a stretcher. Canada’s captain, Stephen Eustáquio, was one of the first to reach Koné, recalling, “I saw his leg. I saw that something wasn’t right.”

After being transported to a local hospital, Koné was preparing for surgery with his family by his side, as confirmed by Canada’s head coach, Jesse Marsch. Shortly after the incident, Nathan Saliba, who replaced Koné, scored Canada’s fourth goal in a dominating 6-0 victory and honored his teammate by holding up Koné’s jersey.

Striker Jonathan David, who netted a hat trick in the match, voiced his concern over the nature of the tackle, stating, “If there’s a play where you cannot win the ball, there’s no point. It’s just to hurt people.” The specifics regarding the extent of Koné’s injury remain unclear, but images from the scene indicated a severe break in his lower left leg.

Eustáquio expressed the team’s sentiment, saying, “We’re going to miss (Koné). He has that X factor that our team really needs.”
