Packers Eye Potential Trade for Pro Bowl Cornerback Denzel Ward in 2026

The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for a pivotal 2026 season, determined to move past their recent challenges and make a significant playoff run. However, competing in the fiercely contested NFC North poses a considerable challenge for the team.

True to form, the Packers have largely opted to develop their roster internally, with minimal activity in free agency. Yet, if they aim to elevate their playoff aspirations, a major trade may be necessary. Fortunately, a suitable candidate could soon emerge on the trade market.

Cornerback Denzel Ward of the Cleveland Browns has been identified as a potential target for the Packers. As the Browns embark on a rebuilding phase following the departure of star Myles Garrett, they may look to offload valuable assets. Moe Moton of Bleacher Report has speculated that Ward could be among those players sent to Green Bay.

Ward, now entering his 29-year-old season, may not fit into the Browns' long-term plans, especially as they continue their roster overhaul. With only two years left on his contract, Cleveland stands to gain $17.4 million in cap savings by trading him this year, according to Over the Cap. The Packers could greatly enhance their cornerback lineup with Ward, who has recently achieved his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.

In the previous season, Ward played 15 games, recording 39 tackles, two tackles for loss, nine pass deflections, and one interception. With the Packers' current secondary relying heavily on Keisean Nixon and rookie Brandon Cisse—both of whom faced their own challenges last season—Ward's experience and talent could be invaluable.

While the Packers aren't known for making splash trades, recent moves, such as the acquisition of Micah Parsons, show they are open to strengthening their roster when the situation calls for it. With Parsons not expected back until mid-October, adding depth to the defense could be crucial. Notably, Ward is under contract through 2027, making a potential trade for him not just a short-term fix.
