Cardiff Reflects on a Season of Growth Despite Quarter-Final Setback

As Cardiff's season concluded with a 44-21 defeat to the Stormers in the quarter-finals of the United Rugby Championship (URC), a mix of disappointment and pride permeated the atmosphere among players and coaching staff. This match in Cape Town not only marked the end of Cardiff's campaign but also the conclusion of the Welsh domestic rugby season, as fellow teams Ospreys, Scarlets, and Dragons failed to secure top-eight finishes, with Cardiff landing in sixth place.

Challenges throughout the season, including financial difficulties and off-field issues, have impacted Welsh rugby. Nonetheless, achieving a place in the top half of the league and making it to the play-offs for the first time is seen as a significant milestone for the squad. “We’re disappointed with the result, but throughout the season we've been great,” remarked Cardiff and Wales wing Josh Adams. “It’s been successful. We knew at the start of the season that we wanted to finish in the top eight, that was our target.”

Head coach Corniel van Zyl, who stepped up shortly before the season began, expressed pride in the team’s progress. “To end up sixth, with 16 quality teams, I say would make us proud,” he stated. Despite securing 11 league victories, including eight at home, the team faced tough circumstances in their away match against the Stormers, especially after a long flight just days before the game.

Flanker Dan Thomas, a standout performer for Cardiff this season, acknowledged both the achievements and the disappointment of being eliminated in the quarter-finals. “Making the play-offs is important for the club,” he said. “It’s an odd one, we’re happy with how the season has gone, but you want silverware.” The team is looking forward to the upcoming season with plans to strengthen their scrum, particularly after signing Australian prop Scott Sio.

As Cardiff prepares for the next campaign, it faces ongoing challenges, including the uncertainty surrounding the future structure of Welsh rugby. With the Welsh Rugby Union still owning Cardiff, discussions about reducing the number of professional teams are expected soon. Despite these obstacles, van Zyl remains optimistic about the team's potential. “There were some rough times during the season with all the off-field stuff, but we can’t use any of that as an excuse,” he concluded.

Looking ahead, Adams is eager for the future, expressing excitement for the growth of the young team. “We just want to keep building and be back in games like this again next season,” he said, a sentiment echoed by captain Liam Belcher, who emphasized the importance of continuing the progress made this year.
