Cardinals Eye SEC Catcher Ryder Helfrick in Upcoming Draft

The St. Louis Cardinals have defied expectations this season, currently holding a 32-28 record that places them third in the National League Central. Analysts had anticipated a challenging year as the team embarks on a rebuilding phase, but the players have shown resilience on the field.

As the college baseball season comes to a close, attention is turning towards the 2026 MLB Draft, where the Cardinals will select 13th. This position offers them a prime opportunity to acquire promising talent, following their trend of choosing college players in recent drafts. Last year, they selected pitcher Liam Doyle from the University of Tennessee.

According to Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter, the Cardinals may target Arkansas catcher Ryder Helfrick with their upcoming pick. Reuter praised Helfrick as the top defensive catcher in the 2026 draft class, noting his significant offensive improvement this season. “Helfrick is the best defensive catcher in the 2026 class, and his improved offensive game might be enough for him to come off the board inside the top 10,” Reuter stated. Helfrick recorded an impressive .979 OPS with 18 home runs and increased his walk rate from 13.6% to 19.1% this spring.

While there is a possibility that Helfrick could be selected before the Cardinals' turn, he would be an excellent addition should he still be available. His strong defensive skills and enhanced batting performance make him a valuable prospect for the team's future.
