Cardinals Rally for Victory Over Cubs with Strong Clutch Performance

ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals have emerged as one of the most surprising teams in baseball this season, maintaining a record above .500 despite their struggles at the plate. On Sunday night, they showcased their resilience against the Chicago Cubs, capitalizing on key moments to secure a 5-1 victory at Busch Stadium.

Despite entering the game with the lowest batting average in the league with runners in scoring position at .223, the Cardinals delivered in crucial situations. Jordan Walker, Alec Burleson, and Masyn Winn all contributed run-scoring hits, while pitcher Matthew Liberatore shone on the mound. Hunter Dobbins, making his debut as a closer, secured his first professional save, demonstrating his potential in a new role.

“It’s huge and against a team like the Cubs you want to get as many runs as possible,” said Winn, whose two-run single in the third inning extended the Cardinals’ lead to 5-0 at the time. The crowd of 34,753 witnessed the Cardinals take two of three games in the series, improving their record to 4-7 against a competitive National League Central Division.

Manager Oli Marmol expressed pride in his team’s growth during a challenging stretch of games. “There are going to be games that don’t look the way you want, but at the same time, I just love the mentality. So, I’m proud of our guys,” he remarked.

Rookie standout JJ Wetherholt had a notable performance with two hits and two runs scored, while Ivan Herrera provided additional support from the top of the order. Liberatore pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, before handing the ball over to Dobbins. Despite a rocky start, which included a solo home run from Alex Bregman, Dobbins managed to secure 11 outs and showed impressive poise on the mound.

Reflecting on his debut as a reliever, Dobbins noted, “Coming out of the bullpen is definitely a different beast, so it took me a second to settle in and find myself.” He enjoyed the energetic atmosphere of the stadium, bolstered by enthusiastic fans eager to support the team.
