Castle Knights Claim 4A Regional Title with Dramatic Walk-Off Homer
NEWBURGH — In a thrilling conclusion at Lockyear Field, Lily Greenwell delivered a stunning walk-off home run that secured the Class 4A regional championship for Castle, leaving fans and teammates in disbelief. Initially unaware of the ball's trajectory, Greenwell dashed from the batter's box, only realizing the significance of her swing when she saw her teammates rushing out to celebrate.
On June 2, the Knights triumphed over Seymour with a final score of 5-4, marking their seventh regional title in school history. The victory places Castle, now with a record of 23-6-1, in the semi-state semifinal against No. 5 Center Grove this Saturday, June 6, at noon CT in Bedford North Lawrence.
"We didn't quit," Castle coach Pat Lockyear remarked after the game. "We were struggling the whole game and managed to get some runs there at the end. All fight in our kids." With just two outs remaining, Castle found themselves in a precarious situation. However, an infield single from Danielle Neel set the stage for Greenwell, who stepped up to bat with determination. After fouling off the first pitch, she crushed the second one over the right field wall.
Greenwell's performance in the regional game was remarkable; she ended the day with three hits, including an RBI double in the first inning. Reflecting on her game-winning moment, she expressed, "I was so nervous. I just wanted to do it for my team, because we can't end here. Being a senior, you just gotta take a leadership role and do what you can with it."
Her journey to this moment has not been easy, as Greenwell faced challenges finding her place in the lineup in previous seasons. This year, however, she has emerged as a key player, boasting a .532 batting average and leading the team with 32 RBIs. Coach Lockyear noted her impressive power at the plate, stating, "This year she showed a lot of power. Her exit velocity is phenomenal. I'm not even surprised at the home run. She's hit the ball that hard all year."
The game had its ups and downs, with Seymour initially taking a 3-1 lead due to aggressive play and Castle's errors. However, the Knights regained their footing, with Maddie Rose hitting a homer to tie the game. After a late rally by Seymour, Castle faced pressure once more, showcasing their resilience. As the team prepares for their next challenge, this victory will be remembered as a defining moment for the program.
