Caston Baseball Triumphs Over South Newton, Advances in Sectional Play
The Class 1A, No. 5-ranked Caston baseball team secured a convincing 6-1 victory against South Newton on Thursday in the opening round of the Tri-County Sectional held at Remington Town Park. This win brings the Comets' season record to 19-5 as they move forward in the tournament.
Logan Mollenkopf took the mound for Caston, delivering two flawless innings where he allowed no hits, issued three walks, and struck out four batters. Carson Harness came in for relief, continuing the strong performance with three hitless innings, striking out eight while allowing just one walk and hitting a batter. Brodie Howard wrapped up the game, yielding one run in the seventh inning but sealing the win with two consecutive strikeouts. Overall, Howard recorded three strikeouts, allowed three hits, and walked one.
Coach Blake Mollenkopf praised his team's execution of their pitching strategy against the Rebels (3-16), stating, “We wanted to get everybody on the mound about 40, 50 pitches just to get on the mound at the sectional, get comfortable and we’ll build from there.” He indicated that for the upcoming game on Saturday, the team might adopt a more traditional pitching approach.
Offensively, the Comets initially struggled but broke through in the fourth inning, scoring two runs. London Herd's leadoff walk sparked a series of events that led to runs driven in by Tucker Woolever, Lucius Edson, and Logan Mollenkopf. Another rally in the fifth inning extended their lead to 6-0, highlighted by Howard’s three hits throughout the game. The Mollenkopf brothers also contributed significantly with two hits each.
Caston is set to face Tri-County (10-9) in the semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m., marking their first encounter this season. The matchup is notable as it revisits last year’s final, which Tri-County won 4-0. “They’re a different type team this year,” Coach Mollenkopf remarked, emphasizing the need for offensive pressure and defensive readiness against their opponent’s small ball tactics.
