Caston Claims Sectional Championship with Dramatic Walk-Off

REMINGTON — The Caston Comets staged an exhilarating comeback to secure a sectional championship on Monday evening, overcoming a late-game challenge from West Central. After relinquishing a three-run advantage in the top of the seventh, the Comets clinched a 6-5 victory in the final moments of the game at the Class 1A Tri-County Sectional held at Remington Community Park.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the seventh, London Herd delivered a clutch sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Logan Mollenkopf to score on a close play at the plate. This victory marked the Comets’ first sectional title since 2022 and their third overall, thwarting the No. 15-ranked Trojans’ quest for their first sectional title since 1975.

Both teams featured a roster filled with promising young talent, suggesting that their competitive matchups will continue across various sports in the future. The excitement of the game was palpable as the Comets rallied in a tense seventh inning, beginning with Mollenkopf getting hit by a pitch.

Eli Holloway then found himself in a tricky situation at bat but managed to connect with a ball that dropped into foul territory, leading to a hit on a subsequent hit-and-run play. With two runners on base, Gavin Mollenkopf earned a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Herd stepped up to bat, sending a fly ball that allowed Mollenkopf to slide home safely despite a strong throw from the outfield.

“I knew I was safe, but it was pretty close,” Mollenkopf remarked. “I felt my hand slide across the plate and I felt the tag on my back. So I knew I was safe.” Herd reflected on his game-winning moment, stating, “I was just trying to think ‘keep it short, get it out of the infield, drive a run in and win the sectional.’”

Caston’s pitching trio played a crucial role in the game, with Carson Harness starting and allowing two runs over four innings. After falling behind early, the Comets surged ahead with a five-run rally in the bottom of the third, demonstrating their resilience and teamwork.

Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf noted that the pressure of making defensive plays is vital in crucial moments. “When you make that tag, you’ve got to finish the play and show the umpire you have the ball,” he explained. As the Comets celebrate this hard-fought victory, they remain hopeful for continued success in the postseason.
