Charles Oakley Critiques Patrick Ewing's Leadership Compared to Jalen Brunson
As the New York Knicks make their way to the NBA Finals this season, former players have been vocal in their support for the team, while also reflecting on past eras. Charles Oakley, a key player during the Knicks' battles against the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, has offered a sharp critique of his former teammate Patrick Ewing's leadership capabilities.
Despite being an 11-time All-Star and a Hall of Fame inductee, Oakley believes Ewing fell short as a leader on the court. In a recent appearance on “The Jim Rome Show,” he stated, “Nah, he wasn’t that kind of leader. He was a big guy. He was our money man. He was the best player on the team.” Oakley acknowledged Ewing's dedication, noting, “I played with him for 10 years. I seen everything here and there... but he wasn’t a leader.”
Oakley drew a parallel between Ewing and other high-scoring players, asserting that not every player who averages significant points is equipped to lead a team effectively. He also mentioned that Charles Barkley shared a similar fate in terms of leadership.
Throughout his decade-long tenure with the Knicks, Oakley experienced numerous playoff disappointments, often at the hands of Michael Jordan's Bulls. He contrasted the leadership dynamics of his era with the current Knicks team, which is led by All-Star guard Jalen Brunson. With an impressive 11-game winning streak, the Knicks are poised to face the San Antonio Spurs in a bid for their first championship since 1973.
Interestingly, Oakley’s comments may also hint at underlying tensions with Ewing, who has been spotted at recent playoff games supporting the team alongside other former Knicks legends. While Oakley’s remarks could be seen as critical, they also reflect the challenges Ewing faced during his time, particularly competing against the legendary Jordan.
