Chase Gothrup Leads Harrison Baseball to Sectional Final with Stellar Performance

LAFAYETTE − Coach Pat Lowrey faced a tough decision regarding the starting pitcher for Saturday's Class 4A sectional baseball semifinal. With two strong candidates in Chase Gothrup and Indiana All-Star Lyrik Neal, Lowrey ultimately chose Gothrup, a decision that proved to be highly successful. The junior delivered a complete game, striking out 15 batters, walking none, and allowing just four hits and zero earned runs, helping Harrison secure a 6-1 win over Lafayette Jeff.

Senior catcher Sieger Geswein praised Gothrup's performance, stating, "He looked good. He was pounding the fastball, hitting the spots, and he'd come in there with a good curve ball and they couldn't do anything about it." This victory was particularly rewarding for Gothrup, who entered the sectional with an impressive 1.34 earned run average but had struggled with a 1-3 record. In previous games, Harrison’s lack of offensive support had hindered Gothrup, as seen in narrow losses to strong teams like Valparaiso and Mt. Vernon. However, on Saturday, contributions from Kaden Keys and Braylen Hands helped secure the win, allowing Harrison to advance to the sectional championship game against McCutcheon on Monday.

Looking ahead, Lowrey indicated that Neal would take the mound for the title game, alleviating the stress of selecting a starter after Gothrup's standout performance. "It does suck knowing who we don't have, but the guys we do have are really good," Lowrey noted, emphasizing the strength of his pitching staff.
