Chicago Mayor Confident Bears Will Remain in the City
The Chicago Bears are reportedly considering Arlington Heights and Hammond, Indiana, as potential sites for a new stadium. However, Chicago's leadership remains optimistic about securing the team's future in the city. Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized this belief during a recent statement, asserting that no concrete plans exist in Hammond or any suburban location.
“There’s no plan in Hammond,” Johnson remarked on Tuesday, as covered by the Chicago Sun-Times. “There’s none of that in the suburbs. We are already further along than any other site that might even be considered.” The mayor expressed confidence that discussions between the Bears and Chicago are progressing, hinting at the possibility of reaching an agreement soon.
“Not only did we have a publicly owned stadium that expanded green space, we were moving forward with conversations around the terms of an agreement,” Johnson stated. He expressed hope that the recent legislative session in Springfield would prompt further collaboration among stakeholders, including the Bears and the city.
Johnson firmly believes that Chicago is the most suitable location for the new stadium, citing a lack of essential studies in the competing sites. “There’s no comparison,” he asserted. “There’s no traffic study in Arlington Heights. There’s no environmental study in Hammond. There are no terms of agreement.” While a new stadium with a roof might alleviate weather concerns, the mayor insists that the Bears belong in Chicago, and he hopes for a resolution favoring the city in this ongoing situation.
