Chiefs’ Travis Kelce follows Patrick Mahomes into MLB ownership
Travis Kelce is expanding his influence beyond the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs star tight end announced Wednesday that he has purchased a minority ownership stake in the Cleveland Guardians, joining the MLB franchise he supported while growing up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
Kelce confirmed the move in an interview with ESPN and described the investment as deeply personal.
“I have so much love for this city,” Kelce said. “… I’m just a kid from the Heights living the dream.”

The move also places Kelce alongside teammate Patrick Mahomes in MLB ownership circles. Mahomes became a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals in 2020 and quickly reacted to Kelce’s announcement on X by posting, “Congrats! @tkelce.”
Kelce’s investment continues a growing trend of active athletes entering ownership groups across professional sports. Current stars like LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo have also purchased MLB stakes in recent years.
The Guardians are now valued between $1.66 billion and $1.7 billion, reflecting baseball’s rising franchise market and the growing demand for long-term sports investments.
Travis Kelce’s leadership approach mirrors winning NFL culture
What stands out most is how Kelce framed the investment. He did not present himself as a celebrity owner chasing headlines. Instead, he focused on culture, accountability, and organizational structure — principles he learned during his time with the Chiefs.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to good ownership in my career, and I know the best teams prioritize culture,” Kelce said. “Everyone is there to play their role, and right now, I’m here to observe and learn and really to support the team and the city when and where I can.”
Meanwhile, Kansas City is looking to bounce back after a disappointing season. The Chiefs stumbled to a disappointing 6-11 finish during the 2025-26 season despite another productive year from Kelce. The offense lost consistency, explosive plays disappeared late in the season, and injuries tested roster depth.
Still, Kelce remained one of the few stabilizing pieces inside Andy Reid’s offense. He finished with 76 catches for 851 yards and five touchdowns while becoming the franchise’s co-leader in regular-season touchdowns.

Kelce’s business expansion also signals awareness about the next stage of his career. At 36, he understands that he is approaching the sunset of his football career. Ownership offers long-term influence while keeping him connected to high-level team building.
