Chisholm's Eighth-Inning Blast Secures Yankees' 3-2 Win Over Guardians

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. launched a home run to start the eighth inning, leading the New York Yankees to a 3-2 victory against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night. This win marks the Yankees' third consecutive triumph, improving their record to 10-4 since May 24.

Spencer Jones also made his mark with his inaugural major league home run, adding to the Yankees' success. Meanwhile, Cleveland's Angel Martínez contributed two hits and an RBI to the effort, though the Guardians have now lost three straight games and five of their last six, struggling at home with a 2-6 record in their last eight contests.

Chisholm, utilizing one of Aaron Judge's bats, took a full-count slider from reliever Tim Herrin (0-2) and sent it soaring into the right-field stands, marking his third home run in just six games. Earlier in the game, he had walked to lead off the second inning before Jones, the 25th overall pick in the 2022 amateur draft, crushed a cutter from starter Slade Cecconi, sending it 443 feet over center field.

The Yankees' bullpen delivered a stellar performance, holding the Guardians scoreless over five innings. Camilo Doval (2-0) earned the win, while Fernando Cruz struck out three consecutive batters after allowing a walk to the first hitter in the ninth, securing his first save of the season.

The Guardians managed to tie the game in the third inning with RBI hits from Chase DeLauter and Martínez, the latter of whom broke an 0-for-18 slump for the team with runners in scoring position by driving in José Ramírez. Yankees starter Gerrit Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, allowed two runs and five hits while striking out four in five innings, marking his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery. Cecconi, on the other hand, gave up two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in his five innings of work.

Looking ahead, the Yankees will have left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodón (1-2, 2.88 ERA) on the mound against Guardians lefty Parker Messick (6-2, 2.40) in the concluding game of the series Wednesday afternoon.
