Chris Hennum Aims to Sustain Success as New Head Coach of Lumberjacks

BEMIDJI — Chris Hennum is stepping into a pivotal role as the new head coach of the Bemidji High School girls hockey team, determined to maintain the momentum built over the past eight years. With the Lumberjacks entering the 2026 Section 8AA playoffs as the top seed, Hennum, who has been deeply involved in the Bemidji Youth Hockey Association, was already preparing for a potential trip to St. Paul, having booked a hotel in anticipation of the team's success.

"I don't believe in jinxes," Hennum stated confidently. "We had faith." His proactive approach included rallying families to join in the excitement, transforming a playoff run into a weekend getaway.

On May 29, BHS activities director Kristen McRae officially named Hennum as the seventh head coach of the program, succeeding Mike Johnson, who stepped down after eight seasons. "I just hope I can continue what Mike developed over his eight years at the helm," Hennum said. "He left the program in a great spot." With aspirations high, he expressed eagerness for the upcoming season, saying, "I wish the season started tomorrow."

A native of Baudette, Hennum's hockey journey began at Lake of the Woods High School before progressing to the United States Hockey League. His passion for coaching was fueled by influential mentors during his youth, and he has since dedicated himself to coaching girls hockey, inspired by his own two daughters' involvement in the sport. In recent years, the Bemidji Youth Hockey Association has prioritized girls' programs, leading to increased participation. Hennum has witnessed these benefits firsthand and believes the excitement surrounding the team has reached new heights as they aim to defend their Section 8AA title. Despite the loss of key seniors, the Lumberjacks return promising talent, including Minnesota Duluth commit Bailey Rupp, and Hennum is hopeful for another successful season.

With strong competition from teams like Alexandria and Moorhead, Hennum remains focused, stating, "It's our game to win, and we're going to project that confidence and use it to our advantage. Hopefully, things go our way, and we're back in St. Paul in February."
