Christian Gonzalez Expresses Commitment Amid Ongoing Contract Negotiations
FOXBOROUGH, Mass — The New England Patriots are eager to secure a long-term deal with standout cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who has also expressed his desire to remain with the team. However, contract discussions are still in progress, leading to speculation about Gonzalez's attendance at the mandatory minicamp. The verdict? He showed up, but with some limitations.
Head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the situation prior to practice, stating, "Good. Conversations have been great." He mentioned his recent discussions with Gonzalez and expressed enthusiasm about having nearly the entire squad present. "It is just good to have an almost complete football team here. I am excited to keep working," Vrabel added.
Gonzalez participated in the first day of minicamp, marking his return after missing all of the organized team activities (OTAs). He focused on individual drills and walkthroughs but did not engage in team drills. Speaking to reporters afterward, he explained his absence from OTAs, saying he believed he could manage his preparation effectively without attending. "I was able to talk to the coaches... and got some work in," he noted.
Regarding his contract status, Gonzalez emphasized his commitment to the Patriots, stating, "Of course, I want to be here. I've said this multiple times, I've been drafted here, I want to be rewarded as a Patriot." While he acknowledged that the negotiations are in the hands of his agents and the team, he expressed hope for a positive outcome.
Interestingly, there's speculation that Gonzalez is waiting on a contract extension for fellow cornerback Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks, who shares the same agents. However, Gonzalez clarified that their recent conversations were more about personal check-ins rather than contract discussions. When asked if he aims to set a new standard for cornerback contracts, he replied, "That's another question that is between my agents and the Patriots."
As Gonzalez focuses on the current minicamp, he remains optimistic about the future, stating, "We've got a long time until the season... I'm focused on being here, showing, being here for the team." The upcoming training camp remains on his radar, but for now, his attention is dedicated to the present.
