Cleetus McFarland Involved in Crash Impacting ARCA Championship Contenders

During the ARCA race at Michigan International Speedway, a collision involving Cleetus McFarland, known legally as Garrett Mitchell, disrupted the championship hopes of several drivers just as rain halted the event after 49 laps of the scheduled 100. On that lap, Ryan Vargas, who was second in the points standings, attempted to pass McFarland but lost control, causing both cars to slide up the track into the path of Andy Jankowiak, the previous winner at Talladega, and Jason Kitzmiller. The incident unfolded while the four were battling for ninth place.

Kevin Hamlin, McFarland's spotter, had advised him to keep a tight line but later remarked that "no one gave anyone room" during the tight racing conditions. Reflecting on the incident, McFarland stated, “I haven't looked yet, but I mean, give up the position and let him clear you, it’s probably not going to happen... there’s a balance to it. And I’m still learning.”

Post-race, Vargas sought out McFarland to discuss the incident and emphasized the need for more space during tight racing. He acknowledged that while he felt squeezed, ultimately it was his responsibility for the contact. “I just slid up a little... nobody was cutting anybody any breaks out there,” Vargas lamented. He expressed disappointment, as the crash significantly hurt his championship chances, leaving him 28 points behind the leader.

Jankowiak, who entered the race in fourth place and 40 points back, also saw his title aspirations dimmed by the accident. He explained, “I was trying to run in a way that gave him enough room... there’s just this weird spot off Turn 2 over there where it gets flat.” In contrast, fellow competitor Jake Bollman extended his championship lead with a second-place finish, focusing on maintaining solid results rather than worrying about the standings.

The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of racing, especially for those competing on limited budgets, as teams like Vargas' Maples Motorsports continue to strive for success against better-funded competitors.
