Colorado Buffaloes Set to Compete in Inaugural Bill Walton Classic

The Colorado men's basketball team has secured a significant nonconference matchup against San Diego State as part of the first-ever National University Bill Walton Classic. This exciting game is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, as part of a weekend event featuring multiple contests.

The classic will host two key games: the men's face-off between Colorado and San Diego State, along with a women's game featuring UC San Diego and the University of San Diego. The specific times for both games will be revealed at a later date. This event is named in honor of Bill Walton, a legendary figure from San Diego and former BYU player, along with his son Chris Walton, who played for San Diego State. National University is the event's sponsor.

Coach Tad Boyle expressed his enthusiasm regarding the matchup, stating that the program is thrilled to participate in this landmark event. "It’s such a privilege to be invited to play in the inaugural National University Bill Walton Classic, which honors a true legend of our game," he remarked. Boyle views this game as an important early-season test against a formidable opponent.

San Diego State's head coach Brian Dutcher echoed this excitement, highlighting the significance of the event for the Walton family. "We’re excited to play Colorado in the inaugural National University Bill Walton Classic," he noted, praising Colorado as a strong program from a top-tier conference. Dutcher emphasized the personal connections to the Walton family, making this event particularly meaningful.

Historically, Colorado and San Diego State have faced each other six times, with their last encounter dating back to January 5, 1976, when the Aztecs claimed a 78-72 victory in San Diego. The teams are currently tied at three wins each in their all-time series.

In addition to the Bill Walton Classic, Colorado's men's basketball schedule includes several other nonconference games, such as a return to the Acrisure Series in Palm Desert, a home game against Colorado State, and a matchup at Providence.
