Colts' Backup Quarterback Contest Heats Up During Minicamp

The Indianapolis Colts have kicked off their minicamp, and a key contest is unfolding for the backup quarterback position, featuring Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard. Early observations indicate that neither player has emerged as the clear frontrunner.

When asked about any distinctions between the two quarterbacks, head coach Shane Steichen remarked, "Not right now. I mean, both those guys are having a good offseason. They're both doing some really good things, and it's back and forth right now. And so we'll see where that goes." Steichen emphasized that this competition will extend into training camp and the preseason.

While Daniel Jones is currently limited to participating in 7-on-7 drills, Richardson and Leonard will continue to share first-team reps. Despite ongoing trade discussions surrounding Richardson, he remains focused on his role with the Colts.

This offseason, Richardson has prioritized refining his footwork and mechanics, skills that are crucial for enhancing his accuracy. The Colts are optimistic about Leonard's potential following his impressive performance against a formidable Houston defense in Week 18 last season, as well as his development since being drafted.
