Colts Place Backup Safety Reuben Lowery III on Reserve/Retired List
The Indianapolis Colts have officially placed backup safety Reuben Lowery III on the Reserve/Retired list, a decision that indicates his choice to step away from professional football. The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a significant moment for the team as they navigate changes in their roster.
Lowery, who was picked up by the Colts off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens last October, did not take the field in any games for Indianapolis during the previous season but provided depth at the safety position. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Ravens in 2025, Lowery managed to participate in three games for Baltimore, including one start, where he recorded five tackles.
The Colts' safety unit has experienced considerable turnover recently, with Lowery's retirement being the latest in a series of changes. Former starting safety Nick Cross has moved to the Washington Commanders, while backup Rodney Thomas II has signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Veteran George Odum, a former NFL All-Pro special teams player who returned to Indianapolis last season, remains without a contract.
In light of these departures, the Colts have added new talent to their roster, including rookie AJ Haulcy, who was drafted in the third round, as well as veterans Juanyeh Thomas and Jonathan Owens. Daniel Scott, who played in four games last season, is also expected to return, alongside undrafted rookie Austin Brown and Ben Nikkel, who had been on the practice squad last year.
This shift in the Colts' safety lineup reflects the broader changes within the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
